अनंग त्रयोदशी

Anang Trayodashi, or Anang Vrat is an observance dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is observed on the 13th day of the Shukla Paksha of Chaitra Month in traditional calendar followed in Maharashtra and Gujarat. In North India, the Anang Trayodashi is observed during on 13th day of Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of moon) in Margashirsh Month.Anang Trayodashi Vrat is observed for a year – on all the 13th day of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in a month. 8th April 2017. It is believed that observing Anang Vrat will help in attaining prosperity, health, wealth and good fortune.The importance of Anang Trayodashi is mentioned in the Garuda Purana.

Apart from Lord Shiva, Kamadev and Rati are also worshipped on the day. The observance includes offering flowers and fruits to Lord Shiva and the prescribed 16-step Hindu puja and worship.When lord Shiva told Rati about getting back Kamdev in form of Praduman, he also said that person who will observe the fast of Anang Trayodashi in a systematic manner will get a happy married life. Their marital life will have peace, happiness and wealth. Observing this fast gives happiness of child.

Kamdev is also known as Kandarp. Having Darshan of Kandarp Ishwar of Ujaain is considered very virtuous, on this day. The devotees who come here and have a vision of lord Shiva, get place in Dev Lok.

हिन्दू धर्म में कामदेव को प्रेम का देवता माना गया है। यही मनुष्य के हृदय के बस कर काम और प्रेम भावना को बढ़ते हैं। शास्त्रों में कहा गया है कि जो व्यक्ति अपने दांपत्य जीवन में प्रेम और तालमेल बनाए रखना चाहते हैं उन्हें चैत्र शुक्ल त्रयोदशी के दिन (८ अप्रैल २०१७)काम देव और उनकी पत्नी रति के साथ शिव पार्वती की पूजा करनी चाहिए।
शास्त्रों में इस दिन को अनंग त्रयोदशी कहा गया है। इस संदर्भ में एक बड़ी ही रोचक कथा है।
शिवजी के श्राप से जब कामदेव जलकर भस्म हो गये तब कामदेव की पत्नी विलाप करने लगी। इससे भगवान शिव ने कहा कि तुम्हारे पति कामदेव का सिर्फ शरीर खत्म हुआ है वह अब भी बिना अंग के यानी अनंग रहकर तुम्हारे साथ रहेंगे और तुम दोनों मनुष्य के हृदय में प्रवेश करके काम और प्रेम बढ़ाने का काम करोगे जिससे सृष्टि चक्र चलता रहेगा।

इसी समय शिव जी ने कामदेव और रति को आशीर्वाद दिया कि जो व्यक्ति चैत्र शुक्ल त्रयोदशी के दिन कामदेव और रति के साथ शिव और पार्वती की पूजा करेगा उसने दांपत्य जीवन में प्रेम और सदभाव बना रहेगा।

Poonam-Vrata: Means to Spiritual Elevation

 

The importance of vratas (pious vows) in life:

It is good to undertake a journey to a pilgrim centre; it affords religious merit. But hundred times more  merit accrues from observing a vrata. There is a kind of firmness in observance of a vrata. On the ‘Poonam day,’ the ardent seeker thinks, ‘It is full moon today. I will not eat anything till I have darshan of Gurudev.’ So the habitual greed of the senses to eat every now and then gets checked and the mind and the senses are restrained. The mind gets inclined towards meditation, devotional practices, and reflection on God. This is highly beneficial to the sadhaka.

Taking a vrata brings firmness – firm belief in Shastras, firmness in one’s convictions and firmness in discharging one’s duty. One devoid of vrata in one’s life gives up his work of boredom. He will become an escapist, and blame others for his failure. On the other hand, he who has taken a pious vow will sooner or later become successful. Above all, he will never feel conceited for his success because both success and failure are illusory in his opinion. One taking a vrata will accomplish every task diligently but will not undervalue himself by giving importance to success or failure in his life. By virtue of satsang, Yoga of wisdom and Guru’s grace, he gets an insight that success and failure are coming and going, and God, the Supreme Consciousness is eternal.

Pleasures derived from seeing, tasting, smelling, hearing songs, music and praise and touching – these five are sense pleasures. Together with joys of honour, pride, and luxuries they make eight pleasures that entangle the jiva (embodied being) in the world. But the observer of vratas does not indulge in them; he will make use of them. He would preferably sleep on the floor during the month of ‘Sravan’ or will abstain from conjugal pleasures on festive days, viz. Janamashtami, Holi, Diwali etc. He might take a vow to observe celibacy for six months or so. Such vratas will certainly strengthen and elevate his mind and intellect.

The Science Behind Observing a Fast

Normally our digestive system digests the food but when there is no food in the stomach, it digests the poorly digested food and accumulated toxins, the causative factors of a disease. But this doesn’t mean that one should fast excessively. Observance of fast once or twice a month makes for sound health, keen insight and spiritual development and endows one with religious merit.

Poonam Vrata affords the advantage of a sacred vow as well as of observance of a fast: Poonam Vrata is a vow. It is also the observance of a fast in that one takes a vow not to eat anything till he gets the sacred darshan of his revered Gurudev. It boosts mental strength.

I congratulate the observers of Poonam Vrata who have taken a vow and observe a fast. An ordinary person may feel uneasy for want of food but my devout observers of Poonam Vrata…. They remain calm and contented, ‘It’s alright! No problem. It doesn’t matter if I take food a little later.’
